Don’t worry that it’s difficult. The first time usually is. The good news is the more you do it, the easier it will get. It may not ever be “easy,” but it will be easier than this.

There are a lot of things I can make today. There are a lot of things I can do. There are a lot of ways I can spend my time. But most important of them all is to make today meaningful.

Here are a few ways I can make today meaningful: hug, laugh, encourage, kiss, smile, give, rest, play, work, nurture, love and listen.

How do you make your days meaningful?

Whenever I need a laugh, I play a BuzzFeed food tasting video. The sniffing, the poking, the licking, the commentary and the reactions of delight and disgust make me laugh every single time.

It’s funny when it’s a grown-up in a video. It’s not so funny when it’s my three-year old at the dining table.

The next time KidFish does it, maybe I should lighten up because what she’s doing is completely normal. Trying new foods can be strange and scary, just ask any of the people in these videos.

Being spontaneous does not come naturally to me, especially since I have two young kids. I like having a plan. I like being prepared. I like following a schedule. So, when I said, “Yes!” to a spontaneous trip to the beach, everyone was surprised (especially me).

Live in the moment. Let go. Get dirty. Get knocked over by waves. It’ll be okay. You know how I know? Because that day I laughed harder than I had in months.

Planning and preparation are good, but so is spontaneity.  The reality is that I need a little bit of both in my life. I can’t plan everything and I can’t be prepared for everything. Even if I could, I don’t know if I’d want to because some of the most enjoyable and memorable moments are unplanned.

Be Spontaneous. It's good for the soul.

Right now there are dishes that need washing, clothes that need folding, counters that need wiping, carpets that need vacuuming, garbage that needs dumping and food that needs cooking. There are a lot of things that need to be done, but sometimes the best thing I can do for me and my family is to just go to sleep.

No sleep makes mama a grumpy lady and if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.

Kids drop things. Kids spill things. Kids break things. It can be very frustrating, especially when they do all three on the same day. But, remember, adults drop, spill and break things too. Sometimes we even manage to do all three at the same time!

The next time KidFish drops, spills, or breaks something, do this: take a deep breath and remind myself that kids are just like adults, only smaller. That means responding to the situation the same way I would respond to an adult…with grace, understanding and a helping hand.
